FreeRice.com
February 4, 2008
Freerice.com is a website that strives to solve world hunger (or at least, as much of it as it can) by utilizing your vocabulary skills. All you have to do is select the correct definition of a word; the more you answer, the more grains of rice that get donated through the United Nations.
A simple concept that improves your english, feeds the poor and kills boredom all at once! Give it a try. :)

Thanks for the heads up on this one – I didn’t know about it yet.
And for the ones that don’t believe it works, check out their FAQ.
This is from there:
Who pays for the donated rice?
The rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names you see on the bottom of your vocabulary screen. This is regular advertising for these companies, but it is also something more. Through their advertising at FreeRice, these companies support both learning (free vocabulary for everyone) and reducing hunger (free rice for the hungry). We commend these companies for their participation at FreeRice.

3baid: It’s an excellent idea really. Ofcourse my first doubt was, what if it’s fake. But people say it’s been featured on BBC and other news. However still I can’t understand one thing. They are getting paid by advertisers for viewing ads, and they are feeding hunger based on correct answers, so the average must be really close to each other or else there will be excess money.
Anyways, I think this is a good thing every morning to do :)
